Teaching Bite: Open Educational Resources (OER)

In March 2019 I facilitated a Teaching Bite session at the University of Stirling on Open Educational Resources (OER) and open education. I have a long standing interest in open education, and in previous roles I have worked on projects that promoted the creation and reuse of open materials. This session was my first opportunity to promote open educational practices at Stirling.

The session looked at sourcing and creating OER and how to incorporate it into online and blended courses. The variety of resources available under open licences was introduced along with examples of the range of subjects that are available. The session allowed us to discuss previous use of open materials and how they could be incorporated into future practice.

The slides from the session are included below.

The OER Starter Kit

The OER Starter Kit has recently been published by Abbey Elder and has been made available as OER.

The eBook provides an excellent, detailed guide on how to use Open Educational Resources in teaching.

The five major topics in the eBook are listed below and take an instructor through the full process of engagement with OER. In addition to serving as introduction to OER the eBook also looks in depth at important topics like accessibility, learning design, the philosophy of open education and considerations for evaluating open educational resources.
